Know Your History

You can’t get to know Brantford (which is on traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishnawbe and Haudenosaunee peoples) without learning about the history behind it, and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to do so while living here. Brantford is named after Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea), a Mohawk chief and leader who allied with the British during the American Revolutionary War; many of his descendants live on the nearby Six Nations of the Grand River. We encourage you to learn about his story, the history of the land that we stand on, and to visit the Joseph Brant Memorial Statue in Victoria Square during your visit.

Continue your learning of Brantford and our Indigenous Peoples’ history with a visit to the Woodland Cultural Centre, the site of the first residential school which has since been transformed and is now dedicated to preserving their history with an art gallery, library and learning centre. Through regular exhibitions and events, the centre provides an opportunity to learn and experience Indegenous culture firsthand, making this a great place to educate yourself and your children in an engaging way.

You’ll likely know why Brantford is known as “The Telephone City,” but if not, a visit to the Bell Homestead National Historic Site will quickly fill you in. When you visit this museum you’ll take a step back in time to July 26, 1874; the date that Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in this exact location, his home. Learn about the history of one of our most important inventions and how it has changed over the years in a fun way with the family.

Of course, we can’t talk about Brantford without giving a nod to one of our country’s legends. Make sure you take a trip over to the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre and take a picture with the statue of “The Great One” before heading inside for a skate. Who knows, you might just pick up some of his skill!

Veterans and military buffs will also love the Canadian Military Heritage Museum, which is dedicated to preserving and displaying military artifacts, with a focus on history in the Brantford area. Though their doors are currently closed, they are hopeful that they’ll be reopening again soon.

Let’s Eat!

Enjoy eating delicious food? You’re in luck! Brantford is home to an incredible array of spots to eat that locals have fallen in love with. Give them a chance and you likely will too!

Start your morning off right with a visit to Pavol and Ibeth’s Deli, known for their delicious breakfasts with a fusion of Eastern European and Spanish Cuisine. If you’re in need of a midday pick-me-up afterwards, local coffee stops like The Blue Dog Café and Healthy Rabbit will do the trick!

When it comes to dinner, enjoy upscale dining with a side of entertainment at The Olde School Restaurant and Piano Bar or delicious Italian fare at Cafe Andreou. If you prefer something more casual, meeting up with friends at Sociable Kitchen + Tavern or Hudson Public Kitchen and Bar might be a little bit more your speed, with delicious grub and local brews on tap.

Add Dairee Delite (an absolutely must-visit in the summer with 60+ years of ice cream goodness under their belt), San Franos, and Stromboli’s Brick Oven Pizza to your list to see what they’ve been keeping a secret.

Drink Me

Not feeling too full from all that delicious food? Perfect! It’s time to discover some of the area’s incredible breweries. Start off with Steel Wheel Brewery, an on-farm brewery; while your visit will start with the intention of checking out some new brews, you’ll also get a side of beer education! Once you have a better idea of where your beer comes from, you’ll want to check out Bell City Brewing Company and Mash Paddle Brewing Company for a taste and to stock your fridge up with great local creations.

Find Your Fun

Brantford is a great place for the adventurous and the laid-back alike. Begin exploring the area with a visit to Brant Park, a popular spot for hikers, bikers, and canoeists, tucked into a bend of the Grand River. With campsites available for rent, this is a great spot to enjoy the great outdoors while partaking in fun activities. Make sure you also take advantage of the Grand River as a whole, a haven for locals during the summer months as they canoe and float in the sun. Mohawk Park is another popular outdoor destination, and a great spot for the little ones with a splash pad, playgrounds and more. Brantford is also home to an incredible trail system for those who want to get moving!

Those who prefer their fun to be a little less active will have lots to check out in Brantford. If you need to relax, look no further than the Grand Wellness Centre, known for their salt cave and massages. They also offer a pretty unique experience; their beer spa offers a selection of hoppy treatments to help you relax. Once you’re feeling refreshed, stop by Glenhyrst Gardens and Art Gallery, a gorgeous 16-acre park with outdoor sculptures and a gallery that features inspirational fine art exhibits. If you’re up for it afterwards, turn up the fun and test your luck at Elements Casino Brantford or catch a show at the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts.

Of course, we can’t forget about the kids! There’s plenty of family fun to go around throughout the year. Get the kids moving with a visit to Kidtastic Adventures, an indoor playground that will let them get out that pent up energy, or learn to skate at Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre or one of the community’s other great indoor and outdoor rinks. If they love to explore, make sure you add Twin Valley Zoo, Brantwood Farms and Earl Haig Family Fun Park to your list – they’re all great places to spend the day with lots of activities to keep the little ones busy!

This four-day annual festival gives attendees a chance to explore different cultures as they visit different “villages” and enjoy entertainment, activities and local fare. In August, your mouth will water when you visit the Brantford Kinsmen Annual Ribfest, where five of North America’s top ribbers compete for the number one spot. Well, here we are – finally shifting into sunnier weather as we look towards the upcoming summer months. The warmer weather – current lockdowns aside – allows us to get out, explore and enjoy nature. This month, we’re going to be highlighting an area that is perfect for those who want a taste of rural life and the great outdoors without sacrificing easy access to many of the amenities that city dwellers have become accustomed to. If this sounds like you, read on to learn more about the community of Flamborough and why it just might be the place that you’ve been looking for.

Flamborough is the perfect area to explore for those who are looking for something that will give them some peace and quiet along with space to grow in. You’ll find lots of greenery and large residential lot sizing, while still being close to bigger areas like Hamilton and Burlington, only a short drive away. This unique location makes Flamborough an attractive choice for those looking to get out of the city while still retaining the convenience of their modern lifestyle. The area also includes the village of Waterdown, which has many great offerings for you to discover.

Room to Explore

One of the biggest highlights of this area is access to some of the incredible park spaces and waterfalls that have become popular for both locals and out-of-towners. If you’re a nature lover or enjoy getting active outside, you’ll have lots to love about Flamborough!

First up, the waterfalls; Webster’s Falls, one of the Hamilton region’s most iconic falls, is also the largest with a 22-metre tiered drop. Part of the Spencer Gorge/Webster Falls Conservation Area, it’s surrounded by beautiful green space to enjoy and a stunning view of the Dundas Valley. Nearby you’ll also find the tallest waterfall in the region, Tew Falls, standing strong at 41 metres. Take advantage of the viewing platforms and add in a hike to Dundas Peak on a beautiful day. You also won’t want to miss a trip to Borer’s Falls, another beautiful curtain waterfall that used to power a sawmill.

Another one of Flamborough’s best features? Outdoor lovers will be hooked on Christie Lake Conservation Area. During the summer months, popular activities include biking, boating, disc golf, fishing, geocaching, hiking, and horseback riding, while in the winter, cross country skiing and snowshoeing are always a hit. Of course, if you just want to enjoy some time outside, the conservation area offers plenty of picnic space and covered pavilions to enjoy a picnic with the family. The 360-metre sandy beach makes the perfect place to relax and catch some sunny rays during the warm summer months. You’ll also enjoy exploring other beautiful spots like Mountsberg Conservation Area, a great destination for the kids to discover with its Raptor Centre and sugar bush, and Valens Lake Conservation Area, another amazing area with camping options available for when you want to spend a night out under the stars.

Find a New Favourite

Once you’ve made your way to Flamborough, you’ll find lots of fun new places to discover. A favourite destination in the area is the Dutch Mill Country Market, the country store with a little more. The market features home and garden decor, unique gift ideas, apparel, and a garden centre; shop around a little before stopping for a bite to eat in the tea room. Another thing that makes this place a great destination? Outside, you’ll be able to pay a visit to the market’s furry friends, adorable animals like alpacas and ponies. 

Not too far from the market, you’ll come across The Tiny Shop Bakery, a popular destination that has been making fresh fruit pies since 1985. You’ll be able to choose a fresh pie from 30+ flavour options, among other tasty treats. Explore a little more and you’ll find The Hanes Corn Maze, which is always a great place to visit with friends or family during the fall.

If you’re feeling lucky, you can check out Flamboro Downs, a half-mile harness horse racing track. Make a night out of it with friends and place some bets at the track, dive into the casino games, or grab a bite to eat at one of their several dining spots. Want to pick the speed up even more? Head on over to the Flamboro Speedway, where you can catch auto racing on weekends throughout the season (temporarily on hold).

When you want to find the perfect brunch spot or dinner destination, you’ll quickly learn why Shy’s Place has become a favourite of locals. Known for their great-tasting local food and fun setting (just wait until you see all of the sports memorabilia that grace the walls), you won’t want to miss out on this local gem.

Tee Off!

Golf lovers, have we got news for you… Flamborough is home to a slew of golf courses just waiting to be played. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or looking for a new hobby to take up, you’ll find a fantastic selection of local courses. Make the rounds at Dragons Fire Golf Club, Carlisle Golf Club, or Century Pines. Find a place to settle in at Dundas Valley Golf and Country Club, Flamborough Hills Golf Club, Beverly Golf and Country Club, or Copetown Woods. With nearly a dozen great courses at hand, you’ll never be bored!

Lots of Fun for the Whole Family

If you’re looking for a place to settle down with fun for the family to enjoy, Flamborough is a great place to keep in mind. Aside from all of the incredible green spaces, there are plenty of family-friendly attractions that are sure to please.

First, take a step back in time during a visit to the Westfield Heritage Village, featuring an incredible collection of over 35 historical buildings, including a hardware store, general store, and school. With more than 200 years of Canadian history to soak up, visitors can explore the buildings, walk around the conservation area and trails, or take part in various programs and special events that will give a more hands-on approach to our local history.

Another big hit in the area, of course, is African Lion Safari. Little ones will love a visit to this safari park, which takes you for a walk (or, in this case, a drive) on the wild side as you come across more than 1,000 different species of birds and animals from around the world, including lions, giraffes, and rhinos. Afterwards, they’ll love monkeying around on the park’s playgrounds and splash pad.

Family fun in the fall is always a sure thing at Dyments Glen Drummond Farm, a staple in the community since 1887. During the fall season, a visit to Dyments pumpkin patch is a must as you take a scenic wagon ride to explore the grounds and pick your own perfect pumpkin to bring home from their patch. You’ll find lots to do after you’ve made your pick, with various activities, a corn maze, and farm animals to meet. On your way out, make a stop at their market and bakery to pick up some freshly-made treats.

And don’t forget to add yearly visits to the Rockton World’s Fair, an annual Thanksgiving weekend tradition that draws in crowds from neighbouring areas. Throughout the weekend, you’ll be able to enjoy rides and games at the midway, take in various displays and exhibits from local businesses and organizations, and enjoy contests and entertainment throughout the fair.

One great thing about St. Catharines is that there’s never a dull moment. The city is always alive with various activities and attractions, and its many festivals will keep you busy year-round!

If you want to get to know what really makes the Niagara region stand out, you’ll enjoy the Niagara Wine Festival (Canada’s largest wine festival, on hiatus this year) and i4C, the International Cool Climate Chardonnay Celebration, which celebrates the region’s many winemakers and their craft. Other notable festivities include Pride in the Park, The Foster Festival, Celebration of Nations, and Culture Days.

A Foodie’s Heaven

Fancy yourself a foodie? You’re in luck! St. Catharines is home to an incredible array of restaurants that are sure to satisfy your cravings. Standouts in the area include Dispatch (voted one of Canada’s best new restaurants by enRoute Magazine), OddBird and their newer counterpart OddBar, Pharmacii, Wellington Court, Bolete, and The Yellow Pear Kitchen, all of which have become well-loved amongst locals and visitors alike. If you’re in the mood for the best pub grub around, you’ll enjoy visits to The Merchant Ale House and The Feathery Pub.

Of course, you won’t want to sleep on one of the area’s most popular spots – Beechwood Doughnuts. The Vegan donut spot has become popular in the surrounding area because of its fun flavours and toppings. Don’t wait on them though – they regularly sell out early!

Imbibe a Little

When you come to St. Catharines, you’ll find yourself in the middle of wine country, though beer drinkers will also enjoy some local brews! Spend a summer afternoon enjoying tastings at some of the area’s best wineries, like 13th Street Winery (make sure you try their butter tarts during your visit!), Henry of Pelham, and Rockway Vineyards, which will also be a favourite amongst golfers as you enjoy a glass of wine after hitting a round on their golf course. For beer drinkers, you’ll likely get to know Cold Break Brewing, The Merchant Ale House, and Lock Street Brewing Company pretty quickly. Is there anything better than enjoying a cold beer or a delicious glass of wine that was made right in your community?

Get Cultured

If the art and music scene is more your style, the city has you covered. St. Catharines is home to several incredible venues and programs that bring amazing talent to your front door! The First Ontario Performing Arts Centre, which opened in 2015, and Warehouse Concert Hall attract touring acts, ranging from musical performances to comedy specials – a little something for everyone! Fans of jazz music will love the Twilight Jazz Series, which brings a different jazz ensemble to the spotlight on the first Sunday of every month, though this has gone virtual for the time being. If art is your thing, you’ll love discovering the Niagara Artists Centre, a not-for-profit collective that was formed by working artists in the community.

St. Catharines is a great place for those who want to learn a little about the past. The city was a terminus of the Underground Railroad, where Harriet Tubman and over 800 escaped slaves settled in the 1820s. If you’re interested in discovering more about their journey, you can tour the Freedom Trail, where you’ll learn as you visit various sites and exhibits throughout the city.

Bring the kids to the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre to learn more about the area’s history and how the canal came to be. You’ll get an incredible view and see ships from around the world on the observation deck as you navigate Lock 3. You’ll also find the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame here, where you can learn about Canada’s national summer sport.

Looking for one of the most Instagrammable spots in the city? You’ll find something special in Graffiti Alley, an alleyway between James Street and Garden Park where serious artists show off their incredible skills and talent.

And no visit to St. Catharines is complete without spending some time in the lakeside area of Port Dalhousie; head down to the harbour and spend an afternoon on the boardwalk with the family. Make sure you pay a visit to the Lakeside Park Carousel, which has found a home here since 1921.

Shop ‘Til You Drop

If you’re in the mood for a little retail therapy you’re in good hands!  Aside from being home to both Fairview Mall and The Pen Centre (Niagara’s largest shopping centre), you’ll also find incredible local retailers throughout the city and in the downtown core. This area has plenty of specialty shops and boutiques for you to discover; you’ll likely find some new favourites on your first visit!

The St. Catharines Farmers Market is another incredible shopping destination for those who are looking for local produce and goods. Since the 1860s, the market has been giving residents the chance to shop and eat local, with live entertainment in the square, a market discovery table with rotating themes, and free educational tours to introduce the younger generation to our bountiful produce scene.

Move it

If you plan on spending plenty of time outside you really can’t go wrong here; St. Catharines has an abundance of green space and trails for you to explore. Round up the pups and take a trip to the Port Weller East Trail, enjoy some time by the water at Lake Breeze Park, and go bird watching at Malcomson Eco Park. Get in touch with nature on the Green Ribbon Trail, where you might come across painted turtles, blue heron, swans, beavers, and more. Take a hike at Short Hills Provincial Park or get back on the bike – the area has some incredible cycling trails which you can discover at the Niagara Cycling Tourism Centre.

During the summer months, you’ll also get to enjoy visits to the Waterdown Farmers Market and the Oh Canada Ribfest and Canada Day celebrations at Memorial Park.

Take a Stroll

Take a small step back in time as you discover historic downtown Dundas. The charming area is full of fun boutiques and specialty shops to visit when you’re in the mood to shop. Afterwards, enjoy a bite at a nearby spot, like The Thirsty Cactus or Detour Cafe, before taking a walk to enjoy the beautiful historic buildings. On Thursdays, you’ll also enjoy visits to the Dundas Farmers Market, which features goods from local farmers and other vendors.

Get brewing

One of the highlights during your visit to Dundas will be a stop at Shawn & Ed. Brewing Co., a local favourite. This microbrewery + pub, housed in the old Dundas Curling and Skating Rink, pays homage to the history of the building throughout. Drop by for a fresh, cold pint of their flagship brew, Lagershed Original, or give one of their seasonal beers a try. Make sure you enjoy one of their new Beer Pies, delicious wood-fired pizzas that pair perfectly with a pint!

Stay Out and About

Looking for a little excitement? Dundas is home to two great festivals in the summer months that you and your family will enjoy. In June, the downtown area plays host to international acts during the Dundas International Buskerfest. You’ll get to take in a very wide variety of street performers, showing off their different talents and can stop by vendors throughout the area. 

After that, you can close out summer with a day at the Dundas Cactus Festival, one of the top 100 Festivals in Ontario. Save the third weekend of August for this annual event, where you’ll see the community come alive as you check out the entertainment on one of the four stages, event zones and over 100 street vendors.

Become a Master Chef If working on your cooking skills and impressing your family is a personal goal, you’re in the right spot! Make stops at some foodie-fave local businesses to find everything you need to up your cooking game. Start off with a visit to Cumbrae’s of Dundas for locally-sourced, small farm-raised meat, then pick up some delicious cheeses at Mickey McGuire’s Cheese. You’ll find everything else you need for a fantastic meal at Picone FineFoods. Kitchen supplies? Visit The Keeping Room to stock up on tools and other essentials – or take part in a cooking class!

Fall in Love with Nature

Nature lovers, rejoice! Dundas is a community that gives you ample opportunity to get outside and enjoy all of the beauty around it. The Dundas Valley Conservation area is popular with locals looking to hike, cycle, or bird and wildlife watch. With a 40 km trail system, plenty of picnic space, and The Hermitage Ruins to explore, you’ll find something new with every visit.

Another great spot to discover is the Christie Lake Conservation Area, which is popular for a casual hike (with 10 km of trails). This is a great place to spend the day during the summer; you’ll find plenty of people canoeing, fishing, and swimming along its sandy beach.

Make sure you don’t miss two of Hamilton’s waterfalls while you explore! Webster Falls is one of the area’s most popular spots, with its beautiful scenery and 22 metre falls; be sure to check it out in different seasons to fully appreciate its beauty. Nearby, you’ll also find Tews Falls, one of the tallest in the area with a 41-metre drop!

Add a Splash of Colour

Take in some culture with visits to The Carnegie Gallery, an artist-run gallery located downtown. Although visits are currently unavailable due to COVID, the gallery normally holds rotating monthly exhibitions that feature art created by contemporary Canadian artists.

Well, December has finally arrived and we’re coming to the end of a year that has been anything but normal. We’re going to finish off 2020 by sharing a community that is rapidly expanding, plays host to some amazing businesses and has an incredible history behind it. Stoney Creek is an area that shouldn’t be missed right now; with its close proximity to neighbouring locales, easy access to Hamilton’s arts & culture scene and strong growth potential, this might be the perfect place to call home. Enjoy Some Time Outdoors

If you’re looking for a space to settle down that provides lots of outdoor activity options, you’re in luck. Stoney Creek – located along both Lake Ontario and the escarpment – has many different opportunities when it comes to getting outside.

One of Stoney Creek’s best attractions is the Devil’s Punchbowl. This deep gorge is home to two waterfalls, Upper and Lower Punch Bowl Falls, and features layers of colourful rock formations. From the lookout, you’ll have an incredible view of Stoney Creek and Hamilton Harbour. You’ll also find the beginning of The Dofasco 2000 Trail, a beautiful 11.5 km hiking route. Afterwards, visit the Punch Bowl Market & Bakery and pick up something fresh to bring home!

If you enjoy spending time by the lake, you’ll take solace in the many beautiful lakeside parks and will quickly become familiar with 50 Point Conservation Area. This 80-hectare park is the perfect place to spend time with the family, explore with your spouse or to enjoy some alone time with nature. With picnic, camping, fishing + boating options available, along with a beautiful, clean beach and a 3.4 km recreational trail loop for hiking, you’ll have no trouble filling up a day of fun.

Those who really want to get their blood pumping will enjoy use of the Heritage Green Community Sports Park. Take a Trip to Downtown Stoney Creek

Though the Stoney Creek community is rapidly growing, the downtown area, or Olde Town Stoney Creek, still has the same charm it always has! Take a stroll downtown and you’ll come across a wide variety of boutiques and personal services to enjoy along with a selection of delicious spots to grab a bite to eat.

Though currently on hold, the downtown area is also home to some great special events that the whole family will enjoy. Annual events like Art in the Parking Lot, the Strawberry Fold Festival, the Apple Festival, Jazz in the Creek, Pumpkinfest and the Stoney Creek Santa Claus Parade are great ways to get out and about while enjoying the community spirit. The Downtown Stoney Creek Market is always a hit as well, bringing fresh local produce, food trucks and baked goods to the downtown core.

Take a walk further down the street to enjoy a little bit of Stoney Creek history – pop by the Amica Stoney Creek Dairy, which is serving up memories of the old Stoney Creek Dairy. When the dairy closed in 2012, it signified the end of an era after 83 years of business as one of the largest ice cream retailers in North America. Now Amica, which was built on the land that the dairy used to occupy, is keeping those memories alive with their ice cream parlour.

Grab a Bite

Stoney Creek is home to some incredible restaurants – there’s no shortage when it comes to dining options! If you’re in the mood for something casual, become familiar with some of the community’s favourite spots, like The Powerhouse (which takes up residence in an historic power station), The Attic Pizza Parlour (give their appropriately-local “Devil’s Punchbowl Pizza” a try!), Mustangs Big Ol’ Grill, The Innsville and Memphis Fire Barbeque Company. Of course, you’ll also have to stop by the legendary Roma Bakery & Deli to try the original slab pizza – it’s their claim to fame!

If you’re in the mood for something more upscale, Edgewater Manor might be more your speed. The restaurant, located inside a stunning 1920’s castle, has incredible views thanks to its beautiful lakeside setting. It’s a popular destination for private events and has an incredible menu which features local ingredients. It’s no surprise that this restaurant is a popular date night spot, too!

Looking to stay entertained? Stoney Creek always has something fun to check out! For an easy date night or family outing, a visit to the Starlite Drive-In is sure to please! Load up the car, stock up on snacks and enjoy a couple of movies in the open air.

If you’re in the mood to imbibe a little, one of the area’s wineries will be a worthwhile stop! Enjoy a glass of locally made wine at stops like Leaning Post, Ridge Road and Puddicombe Farms. Learn Something New (or Should We Say Old?)

You can’t visit The Creek without learning a little bit about its history; did you know that Stoney Creek was the site of a major battle during the War of 1812? Plan a visit to Battlefield House + Monument, located at the intersections of Centennial Parkway and King Street West, to learn more about the Battle of Stoney Creek. This historic defense (June 6, 1813) was a major turning point in the war between British and American forces. Stop by Battlefield House & Museum for a tour of the early 19th century house and experience history first-hand during the yearly re-enactment of the Battle of Stoney Creek (held in June, though held off this year due to COVID).

One of the biggest additions to the area in recent years is the Haber Recreation Centre, located on Tim Dobbie Drive. This beautiful recreation centre (though currently closed due to COVID-19) is the perfect place for families and individuals to get active, meet new members of the community and to take part in different events and classes. The new centre has many great options available to enjoy, including numerous gyms, community hubs, sport fields, a skate park, track, library and more. The centre is a great space to take part in different recreational and leisure programs, with rentals also available.

You’ll be close to other great rec spaces as well; Appleby Ice Centre is the perfect spot for those who want to get on the ice to skate or play hockey. If you prefer to get into the water instead, Tansley Woods Community Centre offers a spacious pool area.

North Burlington is the perfect area for golf lovers! Whether you play regularly or hit the course a few times a year, there are plenty of choices within a short drive. The area is home to the stunning Indian Wells Golf Course, a favourite among local golfers; nestled beneath Mount Nemo, this course takes you through 18 challenging holes while enjoying some truly incredible scenery – especially during the fall months.

A staple in Burlington’s history, Ireland House Museum (currently offering private tours due to COVID-19) is the perfect place to take the kids (or yourself!) when you want to learn something old – and new! Ireland House, which was built between 1835-1837, was the home of one of Burlington’s earliest settlers, Joseph Ireland. Today, the house acts as a bridge to connect our current residents with those who settled here almost two centuries ago. The museum offers visitors a glimpse into Burlington’s history, with guided tours, heritage demonstrations and interactive programming.

This year, they’re bringing a piece of history to you with A Night At Ireland House! Participants will receive a Victorian inspired meal, made from scratch using seasonal ingredients, a beverage from local favourite Nickel Brook and access to live entertainment via Zoom.

If you’re a golfer, you’re in luck. The Hamilton Golf & Country Club, founded in 1894, was designed by Harry Shapland Colt, and is considered one of the best parkland courses in North America. This course has played host to the Canadian Open several times, most recently in 2019, and the tournament will return in 2023. Time to get that practice in so you can see how your scores compare!

Though it has been put on hold this year due to the pandemic, the Fair will be celebrating its 170th anniversary next year. Book an appointment at one of the area’s salons, like Charlie’s Barber Shop or Sylvia’s Studio of Hair.   

You’ll also find one of the pillars of the Grimsby community, GBF Community Services, which works hard to provide assistance to community members in need. This year, they were needed more than ever due to the pandemic, with their food, housing and other services helping out families who required assistance. They were able to distribute 403,000 COVID-19 Emergency Food Boxes thanks to individuals and businesses who came together to provide support when it was needed the most.

Eat Fresh

One great aspect of living in Grimsby? Access to the freshest produce available from local farms. One of the most popular spots in the area is the Grimsby Farmers Market, which takes place every Thursday from May until Thanksgiving. The Market usually takes over Main Street, closing a portion of the downtown sector to make room for local vendors + entertainment, however this year they’ve had to adjust with the weekly market taking place at the Grimsby Peach King Arena with safety protocols put in place. They’ve also gone online, making it easy to order and pick up goods from local farmers, wineries (another perk of living in the area!), meat + cheese sellers and more.

Can’t wait for the market? Follow Main Street out of the central area and you’ll find vendors along the side of the road every couple of blocks; all full of fresh, local produce. There’s no shortage of fruits, veggies and other homemade goods in the area, making it perfect for those who want to support local while eating healthy.

If you’re looking to get your blood pumping, you’ll love living in Grimsby. The town has several recreation facilities available, like the Grimsby Lions Community Pool and Grimsby Peach Kings Arena, in addition to other businesses that also offer space to exercise and learn. This month we’re moving down the road from Hamilton to the community of Downtown Burlington, a beautiful area known for its gorgeous homes, lakefront views and fantastic businesses. Downtown Burlington has a little bit of everything; perfect for young families, retirees and those looking to escape the fast pace of Toronto, new residents will no doubt find something to excite them. This bustling community is full of entrepreneurial spirit, beautiful spaces and residents who truly care about where they live. It’s home to lively festivals, endless amounts of art + culture and fantastic restaurants that have made it quite the culinary destination.

With quick and easy access to the GO Train and QEW, this is the place to be when you want a central location that has countless amenities available within a stone’s throw. Want to support local business? Look no further than your front door. Downtown Burlington is home to an incredible array of local shops, services and businesses, all within walking distance of each other. Whether you’re looking to pick up some fresh produce or tasty treats (Centro’s weekly farmer’s market is a must-visit after you peruse the store), find stylish accessories and clothing (stores like Joelle’s and Scrivener’s have you covered, though you’ll find no shortage of options), relax a little bit (Village Cigar Co. is calling your name) or treat yourself to some TLC at one of the area’s many spas and salons, Downtown Burlington has a great selection of shops and services to cover your every need.

Fashion designer Joseph Tassoni, whose line is proudly made in Canada, knows how important it is to put down foundations in a community that supports local business owners, saying that “setting up roots and seeing the community embrace and support you is the perfect formula to keep pushing forward.” Over the past few months, he had to adapt his business to the pandemic and became the first fashion brand in Canada to make reusable face coverings, as a way to support the local community, both economically and from a safety standpoint, and to ensure his employees were able to keep working. His masks are made of comfortable, breathable material, making them great for both short and long wear.

Tassoni has also used his masks as a way to support Joseph Brant Hospital and their COVID-19 efforts, with $5 from each set of masks sold through him going directly to the hospital and “Join the J”  masks available through the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation for a donation, mentioning that “Everything that I do is about supporting local and the hospital is less than a thousand meters from both the boutique and the studio… for me, it just made sense to give back to them.”

What’s next for Tassoni? He and his team have started production on masks for kids (available as pre-orders) and is looking forward to debuting his fall collection which will focus on our new needs, with elements of this new normal being incorporated into various pieces.

Spend time outdoors

If you’re planning to spend some of your free time outdoors, you’re in luck; Downtown Burlington boasts one of the most beautiful waterfront parks you’ll find. With an expansive promenade and lots of green space, Spencer Smith Park is the perfect place to spend a day with the family and is a quick walk from Downtown Burlington’s shops and restaurants. Pack a picnic full of goodies from local spots and enjoy the sunshine on a beautiful day while the kids splash around in the Dofasco Waterjet Park or take a trip down the Waterfront Trail which runs throughout Burlington and connects to other local communities, like neighbouring Oakville and Hamilton. During the winter months, a skate on the frozen Rotary Centennial Pond is just what our Canadian roots call for.

Spencer Smith Park is also, during normal circumstances, home to some of the incredible events that make Burlington special. Enjoy some good old fashioned barbecue during Canada’s Largest Ribfest, indulge in delicious dishes from local restaurants at Lakeside à la Carte or live it up during the Sound of Music Festival, Canada’s largest free music festival.

The museum highlights Burlington’s history through multiple galleries, exhibitions and unique programming to inspire citizens both young and old.

Over the last few years, Burlington has become a foodie’s paradise, with a vast array of restaurants and cuisines readily available. You can take a walk down Brant Street or through surrounding streets and find a handful of spots serving up delectable dishes and drinks that will leave you satisfied but still wanting more!
